Check Salary.com. You can get a personalized profile that looks at your experience and education for a fee. But they also have generalized info that gives you averages by zip code. You can get an idea of take home pay with deductions and taxes too.

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career.
Diploma vs. Degree?

Trying to make something of myself and help my family…?
I am currently a stay at home mother of two small babies. I want to take courses online to get a diploma so in a year and a half, when my mother retires, she can watch my kids and I can go back to work. My husband and I live off one income and it is really hard. I am looking into taking courses to become a medical office assistant. They offer you a diploma if you take all the courses and pass them. I already have my AA degree.
What I am wanting to know is that, will I be able to get a job with just an AA degree and a Diploma for Medical office assistant????
I want to work in the office of a Doctor, Hospital, or clinic.
I want a career, a good one, when I go and try to find a job.
Please give me your input.
Thanks.

Medical Assisting! Is it worth the $10,800 for school?

Hello.

I am thinking about a career in Medical Assisting and I look online and in the papers weekly to check the market in my area and I am finding that many positions strictly for medical assistants require at least one year of experience.
I also find different positions that require only a HS diploma/GED that ‘prefer’ medical assistants. Is this just in my area? I live 10-15 minutes short of Atlanta. The school I am looking at cost $10,800 for an 8 month program, I really don’t want to graduate with a $8/9 an hour job.

If you are currently working as a medical assistant your advice is desired. And if you are near Atlanta please list the school you attended.

I currently work as a cna and unit secretary in trauma icu for a big hospital in phoenix,az. I make around 16 an hour but that’s b/c i work night shift AND i do both the secretary and the aide job at once.

That seems like WAY to much to pay for that type of program. If you are looking into a vocational or technical college-keep in mind that they tend to overprice their programs. A community college in your area should provide a program for nurse assistants-that’s the best way to go b/c it gives you more choices on where you want to work: doctor’s office, nursing home, home health or hospital. Medical assistants primarily work out of a doctor’s office and i know for my area the starting pay is only about 9-10 an hour.

I’m getting ready to start the RN program next spring and i can tell you that the experience i’ve gained from being a nursing assistant will help me excel in the RN program-you learn so much just by being in the field and i know alot of companies out there will pay for you to go to school as long as you give them a 1-3 year commitment after you graduate.

Home health probably pays a little more than the other choices b/c of the demands of the job-you are required to travel to visit your patients at their home and assistant them with their everyday activities:bathing, eating, dressing, etc. Pay for that in my state is around 11-13.

Hospitals pay well and there are so many areas you can go into-i started out on a regular medical floor but now work in the trauma icu and i love it-it’s fast paced and i learn alot since the patients are so critical and require special care.

If you want to grow in your career and eventually make more money then i would stick with the nursing assistant postition-it allows room for growth as a nurse. The nursing program doesn’t not allow you credit for the medical assistant training and that training will also not allow for work in a hospital or home health.

I received a diploma in Medical Billing and Coding last year. Nobody seemed to care much. I think the AA degree is probably better than just a diploma. If it’s truly what you want to do, work hard and prove yourself. You will have to start at the bottom, but the rewards can be pretty good if you stick with it.

admin answers:

One, the CRNA, is an RN (registered nurse) with a masters degree who sedates people and makes sure that they are stable during surgery. To become a CRNA you need 4 years to get a BSN then at least 1-2 years experience in the ICU or other ccu unit, although most CRNA’s have an average of 7 years, then you must complete a grueling masters (MSN degree) or doctorate (DNS degree) program which is usually about 36 months (3 years) long. And then they must be certified by the board by taking a test so that they can practice as CRNA’s.

The other job I can not comment on because I’m not farmilar with them. I think they may just “assist” the Anestesiologist or CRNA. Sort of how a CNA is not a nurse they are Certified Nurses “Assistants”.

delive_rance

I appreciate your reply but your comment about my nursing job isn’t appreciated, since over here, its different. If you simply think of assistant nurses as ‘janitress’, you are not only offending me, but also offending other assistant nurses who have worked for 20-30 and still are satisfied with what you assumed,’janitress’. And, we are allowed to give injections, maybe not as much, as we also have a basic cardiac life support, just like RN’s, our role might be different & less stressful but that doesn’t give you the right to called it as a ‘janitress’.

I presume you are going to graduate from a degree in nursing aide because it is only 2 years. Naturally you are eligible for any nursing school in Metro Manila. You will finish 3 more years to graduate to a BSN. Are you eligible for entry? Where in Singapore? Surely it depends on your employer if they need someone like you perhaps.

Why not upgrade yourself first before you embarked on a quest for a job anywhere else in the world. As a nursing aide all you do is take out the patient stool or clean the hospital or ward or in short a janitress, they just sweeten the word NURSING on it, it is like a cake with almost nothing on it and doesn’t taste too good but if you put on glitter and much funfare to the cake wouldn’t you like to taste it naturally because you dress it up a little bit. Because you are not even license to use the syringe or inject them to patients.

Yes that is quite true, the nursing schools in the Philippines are quite good and some are excellent in producing nursing graduates, some even top the board exams. And of course, the salary of a nurse in the Philippine is in a dismal state because the Philippines government have no funds to increase the basic salary of the nursing profession that is why more and more nursing graduates are going to the middle easter countries or other parts of the world or to the US to migrate and earn more than they should be earning.

Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses who have gotten advanced schooling (masters degrees). PA is some who received usually a health-related bachelors degree and then attended a program with a PA program.

PA school is a little bit harder to get into than a NP program. However, if you want to be a NP you have to a nursing degree first. Also most NP programs like for you to have nursing experience before you apply. However, many PA schools like young, fresh out of college applicants.

Some things NPs do:
Educating and counseling patients on treatment options and self-care skills
Diagnosing, evaluating, managing, and treating chronic and acute disease and illness
Performing procedures and surgeries….etc

Which is what a PA does as well. The salary may be a little bit different as well.

For more in depth information on NP such as specific salary information, complete list of job duties, educational requirements and more see this article: http://www.registerednursern.com/nurse-practitioner-np-salary-education-certification-advanced-practice-registered-nurse-aprn/

You have to sell yourself and sell your skills. Its not strictly opinion and when they interview you, they will ask for specific examples anyway, to allow you to provide the facts behind your statements. A lot of what you already have is along the same lines anyway. How is ‘maintained professionalism’ and ‘gained trust’ any different to the stuff that VBoy suggested?

The point of a resume and cover letter is to sell yourself for the position. To advertise the skills you have and the experience you have. What you have provided is the experience, but you also need to highlight your unique skills. What is it that you can provide and contribute to the company?

Btw, ‘Skilled in working in various windows’ makes no sense at all. Are you talking about Windows Office software, Windows operating systems? You also need to be more specific. ‘Various electronic reports’ doesn’t provide much information.

First off I am going to state that my goal is to EVENTUALLY become an Registered Nurse.

Right now I am looking for a job that will utilize my customer service and organizational skills, but one that is not going to take over my life! I am in my early twenties, with only a couple years of community college under my belt, and no clear direction. I do not have experience in an office setting; previous jobs (over two years) were all in food and retail. I have plenty of experience with computers, excellent customer service skills, an appreciation for detail and a love for creativity and art. My sister wants my help marketing herself as a personal trainer, and I am wondering if there is a clinical/secretarial position that will provide with help (maybe requiring schooling) with marketing her business.

In other words, I am looking to find an office job that may require some schooling-support this marketing avenue-bridging into a medical office and eventually guiding me into my career of nursing.

I would like to mention that I am still young, very much considering a move to another state in the fall, and with all of this, I would like to have time for a hobby!

Is this plan attainable?
Do you think I should take a secretarial position and go to school for marketing?
Tell me what you think
I would love to hear what you have to say.

Thank you

So when I’m older I would like to become a psychiatrist, and there are courses that you can take, to help with the future at my school. You can do whatever you want, like my friend wants to take the cooking course.
But… I was thinking about taking the nursing course. But I don’t know if it would be a lost cause because I would like to become a psychiatrist… And not a nursing assistant…
This is what the course has to offer… look below.

Certified Nursing Assistant Juniors/Seniors
This half-day program provides students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and learn the skills necessary to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Students learn how to give basic nursing care to patients and residents. This includes assisting with personal hygiene, movement, nutrition, elimination, communication and emergency situations. In the classroom students learn about anatomy and physiology, diseases, illnesses and conditions of the human body, and they practice tasks in the skills lab. Working in the local nursing homes and hospital is required. Qualified students who successfully complete the program have the opportunity to take the State of Maine Certified Nursing Assistant exam in the spring and become a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.). Students are prepared to work as a C.N.A. and/or further their education in nursing or other medical fields.
Attendance is crucial there are state mandated hour requirements that must be fulfilled prior to take the C.N.A. exam. A student interview and references may be required.

Do you think I should do that?

Well, when going into any medical field, it is good to have a stable overall medical knowledge, not just what you will need to know for the field that you pursue, so I would say yes. It gives you that much more experience and could open doors later down the road that you might not even be aware of now. And even if you weren’t going into a medical career, if you want to take it, and would enjoy doing it, then why wouldn’t you?

Medical technologists are finding a lot of their jobs threatened by automation. They’ll still need medical technologists to run the machines and do things manually should they go down, but the job outlook isn’t as good as PAs or APNs (advanced practice nurses). As far as work hours go, it would depend on what area you want to work in. PAs and APNs also make more than med techs.

No potential employer would share details about their wife and children UNLESS you were applying for a nanny position. Next point is that the email was poorly written, ie. Weak English skills.

Example:I design health care, medical spaces, commercial office space, hotel renovations, multi-family /condos.
I’m looking for someone that can be trusted and reliable to work very well and with good understanding.
Does that sound like proper English to you?

Most of the letter is quite vague in describing what your real responsibilities are, which is a HUGE red flag.

I’m in school right now for court reporting and i love it. It only take 2 yrs at the most you can go through it quick if you work really hard at it. Also you can take it online if you want. I go to bryan college and i take it online through a virtual class i have class mates and everything.
They also make very good money. Go online and look at some job postings al ot of them start at 5000.00 a month. You can also go into close captioning when your done.that’ss what i’m planning on doing.

It soooo depends!

Education, certification, licensure, years in field, years at present office, cross-trained, etc……

In my area, entry-level assistants earn $11-$14 an hour, and that’s with a state-approved class…. And it increases from there.

DENTAL CAREER QUESTION!?

I finally decided I’m interested in a dental career . I will be receiving my GED soon .
Dental Assistant Salary is $25k – $40k
Dental Hygienist Salary is $48k – $78k
Dentist Salary is $108k – $178k

I want to be a Dentist and I’m thinking of starting from bottom on up and I’m content with that . I’m 20 soon , me and my mother have conflicts every now and then , and I need to support myself literally being that I’m only a Target Employee in San Diego . I already feel like I’m far behind in life and I just want to better myself completely . I have no kids so I’m wondering if I work as a Dental Assistant would that be an ok salary for a person my age who believes in living practical ? I might still live my mom until I’m a dental hygienist it should take me until I’m 23-24ish but is that salary ok for my age ?

Becoming a dental hygienist will not necessarily help a person get accepted into dental school. On a positive note, some of the prerequisites for DH may be the same for dental school such as biology, chemistry, organic chem and other science classes (and other coursework). However, each dental school (or any program in the field) may have slightly different prerequisites and requirements.

Competition for admissions to dental school is keen. Most dental students have at least a Bachelor’s (four-year) degree, have gotten a competitive score on the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), have a high gpa (grade point average) and excellent letters of recommendation and doing well during interviews. For more information about dental school admissions and the field, in general: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos072.htm#training

Regarding dental assistant, I’m presuming that the salary is more towards the lower end of the scale. If you’re still interested in training, please do NOT attend those private overly priced For-profit tech schools such as pima institute, anthem, concorde career, lincoln tech, keiser, sanford brown, kaplan, everest, westwood, argosy, heald and others as they are merely out to “make a profit” (** and course credits may NOT transfer to other schools).

These consumer sites have negative posts by former students about those private $$ for-profit tech schools, and please heed the students’ warnings:

- http://www.complaintsboard.com and can search.

This site is supposed to have accredited programs in the field: http://www.ada.org/267.aspx and one can click the right-hand side for “dental assisting, DH and dental lab tech programs” or the left-side for dental schools.

I have worked as a childcare assistant and a dental nurse…both aren’t great paying jobs. However if there are opportunities to specialise with dental assistanting. Then the pay is a lot better. I will let you know about my experience in each.

Childcare Worker

You can work as an unqualified however you wage, job prospects and responsibities are less. There are three levels for childcare workers..

Level 1 which is unqualified
Level 2 which is as an assistant. You need to study for a certificate. Your second in charge in the room and help the with planning activities, taking note of childrens’ individual developmental milestones, participating in activites (engaging with children), promote learning and positive behaviour.
Level 3 which is qualified and you need to do a diploma study. As a qualified you are in charge of your room and have the most responsibility planning activities and chatting with parents. Its still similar to what a level 2 does but you get paid a little more.

Also with Level 2 and level 3 you can work with an agency and do temping. I personally loved this..it was great going to a different place everyday. Working in one centre is fantastic too, helping children develop their confidence and learning. Its a very rewarding job emotionally, spiritually…just not financially.
Another plus is you are will be qualified to register with reliable agencies if you ever want to do Nanny work overseas! I do recommend doing this through a registered agency…it can be a fantastic way to travel and work while you are young.

Dental Assistant

Once again you can work as a qualified or unqualified this will effect how much you get paid and your level of responsibility. You can also work for an agency which pays more again.

Most dental nursing positions will be based on a working traineeship and certificate course. Your responsiblities will involve:

chairside assistanting (helping the dentist treat the patient, preparing materials, passing instruments)
looking out of patients general wellbeing: easing fears about procedures.
Setting up the treatment room for each patient
responsible for infection control and sterilization of instruments
charting the patients teeth
educating patients on good oral hygene practices
reception duties: making appointments answering phones, accounts and filing
stock control and ordering
etc…

I enjoyed working as a dental assistant…but the dentists i work for were completely nuts! Lol!
It was a rewarding job however and you were always busy. It was a nice feeling when you would make an anixous patient feel better about their visit to the dentist…most people are pretty scared so it help to have a sense of humour, a smile and calm attitude.

If you want to advance you can work for a specialist and you usually get paid a lot more that general denistry.

I ended up specialising in Oral Surgery which was fantastic! General dentistry..fillings and so on…just got boring. I work for a really nice but highly neurotic Oral Facio Maxillary Surgeon. We would work half the week from his consulting rooms and the other half form a few different hospitals. I would mainly assist in extracting wisdom teeth, implant procedures, soft tissue biopsies, fractured jaws, tmj’s, removal of tumours and cysts and cosmetic and reconstructions facial surgery. It was interesting

You can’t be sensitive to the sight of blood and need to be able to respond quickly under pressure. Is a job where you will become very organised and a total professionist when it comes to sterility. Its also stressful when people come in screaming and crying in pain (you get a lot of emergencies).
If you are lovely natured and enjoy helping people its a great job.

I never worked as a vet nurse but my friend is a vet and she employs people as trainees.

I haven’t included average award wages because they vary depending on what country and state you are in. Just google the government award wage and there should be a list.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do

Hi, neighbor and fellow CMA. I am from N. GA. I work as a Unit Secretary in a hospital, but I am a CMA. It should be pretty easy to find a job in Austell. (I went to high school in Mableton) The area is heavily populated, and I know the pay is better than where I live now. Look in the classifieds, look online. I know you will be a success here in GA! Good Luck

I need suggestions about how to improve/broaden my job skills?

I most recently worked as an office supervisor/executive assistant. I started as a receptionist & worked my way up over the next 3 years.
Specifically, I am looking into taking classes to increase my employability. I have considered studying to get the MS Office certifications. I am also curious about what the local tech school’s “Medical Coding” classes are.

I am an office manager and maybe I can give you a few pointers…

Definately take any training on excel you can. I use excel everyday and it’s important to know formulas and etc.. To make things more professional looking.

If you have time to volunteer in an office do that. I look at that when hiring because it shows you are not stingy with your time and aren’t afraid to take extra time to do things that need to be done.

Research any company you apply to as much as possible and integrate your knowledge into an interview. That shows the employer you are interested in the company not just the paycheck.

Always ask higher than you expect to get paid. I have learned from experience employers will offer you the lowest amount to see if you will take it. They usually have room to play with.

Good luck to you!

Medical Assisting in the UK/Australia?

I’m graduating from a medical assisting program in a few months and have been wondering, is the medical assisting profession a prominent one in such countries as England, Ireland or Australia? I can’t seem to find any information on the internet, but I’m interested in living abroad and would like to know if my skills are marketable in other countries. I realize that the medical field is an important one no matter where you live, but my question is, is there a demand for medical assistants, or is the demand mostly for RNs and docs? Would I be able to find work in doctor’s offices/hospitals? Is there any special certification I would need?

I think Rose is thinking of a medical assistant, not a physicians assistant.
NPs are trained (at the masters level) in a nursing based model, in a nursing school, often in a specialty such as pediatrics or GYN, but they can be family practice as well.
PAs (most programs are becoming masters as well) are trained in a medical model at a program associated with a medical school. All PAs come out as family practice and then can do residencies to specialize, or specialize on the job. Many PAs go into ER, orthopedics & surgery, but there are PAs in all specialties.

Both have prescriptive privledges in all states, with their own DEA #.
NPs can have their own practices, but many are associated with a physician.
PAs are always associated with a physician but otherwise can practice autonomously & see their own patients.
Both diagnose, order & interpret tests, write Rxs. PAs tend to be a bit more procedure heavy (suturing, casting, reducing fractures, etc); but there is always overlap on the individual level.
PAs need 100 hours of continuing medical ed every 2 years and retake their board exams every 6 years.

Which is better for you? Depends on your philosophy (medical versus nursing) and the area you want to go into. When you get further along in your education, you might want to shadow one of each.

Salaries for both are competitive and will be much different by the time you are there, but are around $50/hour.

The unemployment rate is low for entry level jobs in the area, and the average salary after about 5 years experience is $67,000. I can only imagine that nurses make even more. I have a friend who took the CNA program at a community college and another friend who completed a program to become a Veterinary Assistant. The veterinary assistant makes 32,000 while the CNA makes only 28,000. And we all live on LI, NY! Why are CNAs so underpaid for the work that they do?
Marketing/Management or Nursing???

I’m 22 – I started junior college fresh out of highschool and certain events caused me to drop out my second year, ruining my GPA. I just signed back up and I am currently taking classes over (basics, unfortunately) to take place of the grades that are hurting me. I am so indecisive.. I took a nursing assistant course between then and now and worked at a local hospital for about a year and hated it. Maybe it was just my environment but the nurses were so lazy and expected me to take care of two hallways full of patients so I quit and am working as a secretary.
I just need advice. I know it’s all about “what you love, what you want” BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WANT!
I can either pursue into nursing and hope that I find a better place to work, because I know that route will at least give me a set salary – Or I can go ahead and get a business/management degree and hope I get lucky there. I am way better at being creative and using the computer than I am with measuring fluids and poking people with needles.. but I want to be the bread winner in the relationship and I want to know that if I spend my time in business I will be able to find a way to make the money I have always dreamed of.
I really don’t know what to do now that I failed. I made it a year and then failed 3rd semester with a 74 average and I needed a 75 to pass. I have to wait a year to get back in, but I really hated the stress of it. I completely broke down in clinical and my heart really wasn’t in it.
Don’t give up on Nursing. Keep at it. This very story was that of my girl friend one year ago. She going to get back into nursing and give it another shot. Nursing is not easy. Once you complete your Nursing degree you will have the drive and dedication to sail smoothly through the rest of your life. Don’t Quit!

What are job prospects like for a Medical Assistant?

Alright, the economy is terrible. I originally was going to a four year university and I disliked it because I was dealing with roommates that I absolutely hated on top of that I was a full time student. I was way to overwhelmed. I do have an associates Degree In General Studies, but I found that this really wasn’t helping me out very much. I have been able to get interviews but no job offers. I have decided to go back to school in the fall to CHI Institute to earn a diploma for being a Medical Assistant in the state of Pennsylvania during the fall. I will also be volunteering at the local hospital in that area during the school year as well. I have never had a full time job, but I do have almost 6 years of customer service experience in a grocery store (I’m only 23 so it heads all the way back to high school).
What are the job prospects for a certified medical assistant? I really don’t want to work in a grocery store the rest of my life, I’m 23 going on 24 in a few months and not getting any younger. I really can’t afford to be stuck in limbo like this with a terrible economy for two much longer because I need to make my own life.

So the overall question is, is what are the job prospects like in this field, and what are my chances of landing a full time job in the next 1-2 years? Also, if you have any experience within the field, what are some suggestions to make my chances of landing a full time job better?

I went to school for medical assisting and know where your coming from. The job prospects are good, but most of the jobs in the field require you to have some experience(1 to 2 years). But its good that your volunteering so that you’ll get that out the way. If you keep volunteering for the next few years, you should definitely be able to land a good job. But be aware that most medical assistant schools credits do not transfer to a regular college. I went to Kaplan College and they lied about that to my entire class! To give you the highest chances of landing the job, become certified, get a medical office certification as well, get a phlebotomy certification and volunteer in different clinics(children’s and general population) to give yourself an edge. Most new grads won’t have these things, so if you do they will most likely hire you over the others.

P.S. Learning spanish will also help your chances greatly!

It always seems like a better idea to go for more education rather than “just” a certificate or diploma. Please be aware that there are NOT supposed to be too many jobs for medical assistants (or medical billers or coders) despite what those private overly priced For-profit schools say.

If you’re still interested in training, please consider the more affordable community college or even county vo-tech school as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

Print this article
A cosmetology business is unique because you can work from almost any space, from your own home (with the proper licenses) to an upscale salon. Cosmetology encompasses many avenues of the beauty industry, including hairstyling, nails, skin care and makeup. A cosmetologist can perform one or all of these services as a licensed professional.

Licensing
If you are starting a cosmetology business in a salon or spa and are working as an independent contractor (which means that you are an independent business within another person’s business), the only license you need is your state cosmetology license. A state cosmetology license is issued following the completion of formal cosmetology training and a passing score on the state licensing exam. If you are going to start a cosmetology business on your own, perhaps in your own home or in your own workspace, you will need a small business license as well. Small business licenses are often issued by the city or county where you will be working and can be obtained after filling out paperwork as well as paying a fee (fees vary by location).

Tools
Tools are an essential part of any cosmetology business. Without them, you will be unable to perform client services. For example, if you are planning to do hair, be sure to have a set of combs, brushes, scissors, styling tools, clips, coloring brushes, bowls and bottles. If you are going to work on nails or makeup, make sure you have a basic set of tools for all of the processes you will perform. Check with your employer (if you will be working at a salon) to see if she provides any tools for your business.

In addition, a cosmetologist should also be prepared with cleaning and disenfecting items according to the regulations for your state. If you are starting your own cosmetology business at home or in a new workspace, you will need to purchase hydraulic salon chairs, stations, mirrors, sinks, shampoo chairs, a reception desk/area and a credit card machine (if you plan to take credit cards in addition to checks and cash). The majority of these items can be purchased from salon suppliers such as Sally Beauty Supply or Salon Interiors.

Supplies
Supplies such as hair products, makeup, skincare products and chemical ingredients are also an important factor in any cosmetology business. You can purchase these supplies at professional beauty supply stores such as Maly’s West and Cosmoprof stores. Since these stores are professional beauty supply stores, their prices are wholesale, and you need to show your license to make purchases.

Workplace
Workplaces are as different as cosmetologists themselves. Some cosmetologists choose to work freelance, while others work in salons. Choose your workplace by how you want to run your cosmetology business. Freelance cosmetologists can find work through a union if they are in one or through ads in your local newspaper or city website. If you have clientele already, you may want to start by renting a station at a salon or spa. By renting a station, you are an independent contractor who pays a weekly or monthly rental fee for use of a workspace in a salon or spa. Let your clients know that you have begun working at a salon or spa by sending out mailers or email notices. You can also choose to work either as an employee who is paid an hourly wage or as a commissioned employee who earns a preset commission on the services you perform and the products you sell.

Expert Insight
The website, StyleCareer.com says that professional hair care is a growing business. Sales revenues for salons are increasing, and Clairol estimates that 55 percent of all American women color their hair, with 20 percent getting their hair colored professionally. That figure is supposed to rise in the coming years, so if you are considering starting a cosmetology business, now looks like a good time to do so. As a matter of fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that personal appearance workers will grow by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is due to an increasing population, leading to greater demand for hair services. Additionally, the demand for hair coloring and other advanced hair treatments has increased in recent years, particularly among baby boomers and young people. This trend is expected to continue, leading to a favorable outlook for hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologis

Let me help you out. Most medical asst programs are not accredited and charge big money.

Go to a technical school and become an LPN. It’s less money, less time, better pay, and you can pursue an RN if you choose.

If the community colleges near you offer a medical assistant program, it’ll save her at least $20,000 dollars. Everest, Kaplan and other schools like that are very expensive, and IMO, you don’t make enough as an MA to be comfortable paying off that size of a loan. So if you can find this program at a community college, seriously check it out.

To be able to sit for the certification exams in this field, she needs to go to an CAAHEP or ABHES accredited program. You can search for all such programs here:

That seems to be the consensus with a lot of MAs who have finished school about the scarcity of jobs. It seems as though a lot of employers prefer MAs with a couple of years experience in order to possibly get the job. How about applying for related jobs such as medical receptionist, health information (medical records) clerk, radiology (usually large films) file clerk, office assistant or such. Perhaps you can sign up with a few different temporary job agencies in order to even lessen the gap in ones resume. (Please be aware that if any job agency asks for money upfront, that it is a scam between us and the wall since no one should have to pay to work

You may have a local Career One Stop center which is supposed to offer free career/job services including help with resume and cover letter writing (and please remember to always send a cover letter with the resume since the cover letter briefly expands on the resume) and they might help one to put your resume onto the State job bank (though not necessarily for a state job). To search for a local center: http://www.servicelocator.org

Tell her that a GED is nothing at all to be ashamed of. It is a great accomplishment and totally recognize by employers – I would really suggest that she go and get that.

If the GED is an absolute no in her opinion, then tell her to look into what she needs to do to get her H.S. Dipploma. Maybe with some tutoring, she’d do very well and pass all the needed tests.
Whether it’s the GED or the H.S. Diploma, it is something she really needs to do. She is going to find the job market very closed to her otherwise – those 2 things are often a requirement of many, many jobs.

Good luck and wish you both the best!
