Hi, I’m currently a physician assistant student at St. Francis University Pennsylvania. A PA is pretty much a physician but will less years in school. PAs can do everything a physician can do, but they cannot practice medicine alone, they must work under the supervision of a physician. They can do anything that thier supervising physician does and do not have to have one certain specialty, they can jump around from behavioral medicine to invasive surgery (as long as the supervising physician does it). They usually aren’t on call and they make good money but with less responsibility than a physician. After you graduate, there is no internship or residency, you go straight into practicing medicine. I do warn you that just because you technically aren’t in medical school, it is definitely not less demanding. You have to learn everything in 2 years that a medical school student learns in 4. If you are looking into programs, I suggest St. Francis. They are ranked in the top 20% in the nation as well as number 1 in Pennsylvania. Here is the link to the website: www.francis.edu
Hope this helps. Good luck!

It really depends on where you want to work. A hospital? You will more than likely just want to become a nurse. In a pedi office? You could probably look into medical assistant. Remember though, in a hospital setting you are not going to be “playing” with healthy babies. They are in the hospital for a reason. Good Luck in your decision.

Medical Records Clerk Salary and questions?

Hi, I just graduated at the top of my class from my Medical Office Assistant school. I worked my butt off, got excellent grades, and now I’m ready to work! I’ve sent out so far 30 applications. I’ve got 2 interviews lined up next week. One is for a Veterinary Receptionist position at an Animal Hospital, the other is for a Medical Records Clerk at a Psychiatric & Substance Abuse Care Facility. Animals are my passion in my life, so I always want to be around them. But the other thing is that in this day and age the will to survive and support yourself, is well kinda stronger.

I live around Buffalo, NY and I seem to be getting conflicted salaries. I’m just wondering which makes more. And really what are the best questions to ask an employer for both positions, and what questions can I be expected to answer?

I already plan to ask the medical coverage for both positions. My dad wants to retire soon, so at least he’d only have to worry about my brother, and if I can take care of myself, well that would be just great.

Thanks in advance for answering! Happy Holidays!

It’s generally recommended to say that ‘salary is negotiable’ as to not overbid or underbid especially with all of the competition out there Please remember not to bring up salary until the very end unless the interviewer brings it up before that time.

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search ‘receptionists and information clerks’, ‘file clerks’ or such. You may want to also search ‘medical records and health information technicians’ even though one usually needs to have completed a 2-year associate degree program that is accredited even though you’re probably aware

How is YOUR job being a Medical Assistant?

Starting January 2012, I’ll be getting my AS to become a Medical Assistant at SWFL College. (I live in Fort Myers, FL). I want to work with people, help them, but be in the medical field. I read up the being a MA, you do a broad set of things, like you can take blood, vitals, keep the office running smoothly, and do things that a nurse does under the supervision of a physician. True?

And according to bls.gov, employment is projected to increase between the years of 2008-2018 (I’d graduate in 2014). In my area, there aren’t any schools to become a LPN, which would pay much more. And I don’t exactly want to be a nurse. I don’t mind working in an office, greeting people, or helping patients get set in the room. And how much would you say it pays? On bls.gov, it said:

“Median annual wages of wage-and-salary medical assistants were $28,300 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $23,700 and $33,050. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $20,600, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $39,570″

As long as I make more than 23,000, I’d be happy.
So, please tell me your experience being a MA, in RECENT years, because things have changed from four or so years ago. And it would do wonders if you told me how being a MA in Florida is. Thank you.

Your work is connected with the doctor, the pharmacies as well as with other doctors and specialist services that you have to direct patients too. The job has long hours especially during sick season. Your normal day will have from eight to ten hours and you have to be on your feet for most of the day.

There are many different degrees available, and you can either be a certified medical assistant or a registered medical assistant. Your salary is dependent on where you work, the national median salary is about $13.77 per hour and that works out to about $28,000-$48000 annually. However when you compare the cost of education to your salary, it is a reasonable profession to pursue.

The benefits of this job include being able to help people and also the ability to meet new people daily. There are many job offers available and you really need to be caring, like working with people and have good communication skills. You can go on to be a RN and LPN. You can work in any medical area from pediatrics and even in geriatrics.

Not trying to be rude, but your last question really irritates me… If you are looking for an easy place to work, please stay out of nursing and medicine. Try a fast-food chain or a department store. We only need those who are willing to do their job and half of someone else’s. Thanks

I currently have a job,and I love my patients most of whom are elderly, but theres too much office drama & paperwork, and not enough patient care for me. I also enjoy doing bloodwork.By far my patients are what make the job worthwhile!
I already do bloodwork, so no certification is needed there. It is just a aspect of my job that I like.
Im thinking about home health, or phlebotomy, but no pt care their…what are the pay rates for something like that?home health aide, unfortunatly I still have bills to pay.

If you don’t want drama and paperwork…..stay out of a hospital…..it’s double there. Believe me….been doing it (paperwork) and seeing it (drama) for 15 years. At home nursing would provide more patient care ina friendlier environment…..maybe.

Not sure what part of tx you are in, so try tx.online/education or try your local community college. They may give you credit for your prior experience/education. Although being certified is not a requirement in tx either, most employers want you to be. In my opinion, you should look into a 1yr lvn training because a medical assistant role is very similar and takes about the same time in school, but the pay for lvn is much better, 20k more.

I actually work on Fort Hood at the main Hospital. Check out the website for the hopsital www.hood-meddac.army.mil and go under employment. Most of these jobs are hired by contract, it will tell you which positions and which contract to apply to. Are you a spouse in the military? If you are you have spouse preference to get a GS (civil service position) which pays more and better benefits.

admin answers:

You would have to be significantly trained, and since there are licensed vet techs out there, I doubt a vet would have the time to do that. Vet tech involves quite a bit more knowledge and quite different training than a MA (do you where & how to take a cat’s BP? Or how to castrate a dog? Or put in post op sutures? Or how to position a dog for surgery? Vet techs do all kinds of things.). So yes, unless someone is really willing to spend a lot of time training you, you would have to take more classes.

admin answers:

As a Medical Assistant, you usually work in a doctor’s office or in an immediate care clinic. Some MA’s work as patient care techs in the hospital; they draw blood, do EKGs, and basic patient care, although they are not allowed to administer medication as they can in the doc’s office or clinic. A nurse’s aid does the “dirty work” so to speak. Bedpans, getting folks up to the toilet, baths, that sort of thing. If I were looking at the two, I would go for the Medical Assistant training. The office manager at my doctor’s practice was her MA for years and now she runs the front and back office of a 4 doctor practice with only a certificate from a vocational school and about 10 years of MA experience. There is no advancement for a Nursing Assistant unless you got to college for a nursing degree. I would imagine it’s easier to get a job as a CNA based on the turnover of workers, but as a Medical Assistant, you’re also trained with medical office skills, so insurance billing and other similar fields are open to you, as well, if you decide you don’t really enjoy direct patient contact. Again, CNA’s are pretty much stuck with nursing home jobs.

admin answers:

I teach medical assisting. I’m not sure what you mean by a diploma but an associate degree in medical assisting is definitely better than a certificate. If you can, go to junior college as they are much less expensive.

Yes, it is true that it can be tough to get a job without experience. It is best if you can volunteer in an office while you are in school, although sometimes they won’t let you volunteer because of insurance issues. The big thing while in school is to NETWORK. Tell your friends, family, doctor, dentist, chiropractor, GYN doctor, etc that you are going. You can also join HOSA, which may help you or the American Medical Assistants Association. Here in CA it is the California Medical Assistants Association.

There are valid reasons to skip medical assisting and go right to LVN or RN training program. If you can do the LVN program for the same time and money you will get more bang for your buck.

However, keep in mind that while you can’t write off your initial training, you might be able to write off classes which further your career. So you couldn’t write of MA training but possibly could RN–check with your tax person.

OR you may get in with a company which will pay you to further your training or give you tuition reimbursement. You pay for your class and they pay you back once you pass.

Another thing you could consider is to start as a CNA. They get all the worst duties that the RNs don’t want to do but it can be a better way to start than an MA. I don’t know about where you live but here in CA one has to be a CNA and then they can train to become a home health aide. This tends to be much easier as you can just work for one person or a couple in their home. The need for this type of worker is exploding as the baby boomers and their parents age. People want to stay in their homes rather than go to a nursing home.

Know that a lot of RN programs are impacted and so if you begin as an MA or CNA you have a better chance of getting into RN school and you will tend to do better as you already know some of the stuff.

So here are some options. Good luck to you whatever way you choose to go.

If the certificate is from an accredited school then you have a chance.
You would not call it certificate, you will call it an associates degree
If it’s from one of these online scam schools, then the certificate really does not hold much value

Dental Assistant. Possible job availability for the other two positions is drying right up. Law is VERY time consuming.

Be aware of what you are proposing on getting yourself into. Please do more research first. Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession. Consider career paths that have available JOBS.<<<<<<<<< Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING, crumbling, and dying vocational field. Many reasons. We now have computers. So, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, there are a lot of companies out there making very efficient legal software for the field of Law. Today’s graduating lawyers tend to be very computer savvy, so they just do the work themselves to save themselves the cost of overhead. Also, the “Public” buys this legal software in order to get legal work done without the cost of an Attorney. Also, we simply already have way too many Legal Professionals – we have an absolute glut!! (“Legal Professionals” includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)

There are no jobs in the vocational fields of Paralegal OR Administrative Assistant. My family, coworkers, friends, acqaintances, etc. Are being laid off left and right in this vocational field.

Employers today want employees with Bachelors degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those “certificates” you see advertised aren’t worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally scams. (I found this out the hard way.)

Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+.
Be prepared to take on a LOT of debt.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Even if you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <that the job market/economy is just saturated with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will lie to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival – they will tell students anything to get to the students’ money. (Which is why they won’t tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates………….Remember: law schools are BUSINESSES – their top concern is making money for themselves.

If you don’t believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. Call some local law firms – ask to speak to the Manager of Human Resources – ask them if they are hiring; ask them what they think about job availability in the field of Law………………

In the book “So You Want to be a Lawyer?” by Marianne Calabrese and Susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): “The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate >each year>>Healthcare or Information Technology! I spoke to a career counselor from Jobs and Family Services, and HE told me that these areas are where the jobs are, and future job availability! And scholarships!

Good luck.

(This is based on my current knowledge, information, belief, and life experiences. This was intended as personal opinion, and not intended to be used as legal advice. Please be careful and do your research.)

admin answers:

Your two most recent jobs run simultaneously, so I have to assume neither one requires your full time. However, adding them together says you are currently making $52,500.

No, wait: the Centech one lists an ending salary as well as “Present.” So are you doing both? If so, you can hardly afford to leave both jobs at once. If that was a typo, and in fact you left them in December to go to FAA, then a reasonable salary for a replacement job would be $30,000.

Fact is, you need to move up by at least 10% to make jumping to the new job better than staying where you are. Otherwise, the fact that you have not stayed on any one job long is going to loom large on your resume. If these were all temporary assignments, or contract jobs that were completed, this would be reasonable. Otherwise, I would not hire you for fear you would not stay long.

If, on the other hand, you are staying with the current employer, but want to ask for a raise, no reason you should not ask for $30,000.

admin answers:

Well, first you need to be willing to work for nothing so you can gain some experience. Labs and research groups will gladly give work to people who will do it for free. Then if you’re good, they’ll hire you based on experience for pay.

Look beyond your university. All students zero in on the university first, so research positions can be difficult to find. Go to a research hospital instead (like a cancer center or AIDS hospital) and look for volunteer positions and internships. Or you can find a non-profit organization to take you. Go for the big names, but understand non-profits seldom pay money. And if they pay, it’s a paltry sum.

Or try your local heatlh department. They do plenty of research projects, and they love slave labor. That’s how I did my master’s thesis.

Dress up your resume to make yourself look good and be proactive. Research the projects your profs are doing. Pick a few projects that sound interesting to you. For example, if you are interested in infectious disease research, you might wanna focus less on tobacco prevention research. Then seek the professors and visit them in person. Talk to them about the projects and see whether there’s a place in the lab for you.

Bare minimum – just make sure you have paper for taking notes, and any textbooks that are required. You can hold off on non-required ones until you know how much your class will be using them.

admin answers:

It depends on what state you are in, each one is different. A certified dental assistant is the same thing a as registered dental assistant, (at the least in Ohio) the only difference is that you pass three state administered tests. As far as i know they pay about the same b/c you get the same training. If you are going back to school for dental i highly recommend being an EFDA (expanded functions dental assistant) they actually finish fillings after a dentist has prepped the tooth – they make a whole lot more money than a regular assistant, and it takes less than a year to complete. If you want the big money do hygiene. I went to school for dental assisting (basic) and was highly disappointed. They told me what i wanted to hear and how i was going to make good money…i did it for two years and made like $9/hr to be covered in spit and germs everyday. So if you really want to do dental it is worth your time to go the extra mile for a better position. Good luck!

Median hourly wages of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants were $11.46 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $9.71 and $13.76 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $8.34, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $15.97 an hour. Median hourly wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants in May 2008 were:
Employment services $12.10
General medical and surgical hospitals 12.05
Nursing care facilities 11.13
Community care facilities for the elderly 10.91
Home health care services 10.58

Nursing aides, also known as nurse aides, nursing assistants, certified nursing assistants, geriatric aides, unlicensed assistive personnel, orderlies, or hospital attendants, provide hands-on care and perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Specific tasks vary, with aides handling many aspects of a patient’s care. They often help patients to eat, dress, and bathe. They also answer calls for help, deliver messages, serve meals, make beds, and tidy up rooms. Aides sometimes are responsible for taking a patient’s temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, or blood pressure. They also may help provide care to patients by helping them get out of bed and walk, escorting them to operating and examining rooms, or providing skin care. Some aides help other medical staff by setting up equipment, storing and moving supplies, and assisting with some procedures. Aides also observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nursing or medical staff.

admin answers:

All nursing homes that accept medicare part A have the ability to offer training themselves if they chose to.
Medicare reimburses all their cost to do so from training materials to the instructors salary.
To be a Certified Nurse Aide you must take a class and do the clinical time which involves 40 hours of class room studies and 35 hours of clinical time. You then must be scheduled for, take and pass a state licensing exam that includes a written test as well as a “skills” test. This testing must be completed within 120 days of your completion of classroom work. You are allowed to take the test three times if you fail to pass it the first time. You are also allowed to work as a CNA during the 120 day period. Each state has it’s own licensing and registry for CNAs but the laws are all governed on the federal level for those who are employed in any healthcare provider who accepts medicare part A payments.

You can also go to a community college or vocational school and pay for classes to become a CNA.

If you feel like you would like to become a CNA apply for a “helpers” position at a nursing home. They generally pay less but you will be able to observe what a CNA does and it will help you decide. If the nursing homes in your area do not hire helpers ask about volunteering.

Helpers or volunteers can do some of the things a CNA does except they can not do actual patient care. They can not transfer from bed to wheel-chair but can push the wheel-chair once the patient is in it. They can not, dress, toilet, bath, walk or assist in any ADL but they can watch and learn as well as pass ice and water, make beds, play games, talk, stock supplies for the CNAs and once trained they can assist in feeding.

“Generally”, and not every case- Medical Assistants are limited to working in clinics and doctors offices. LPNs can work in clinics, doctors offices, hospitals and emergency rooms, ect. Both can administer meds, and are pretty much close in responsibilities. CMAs work closely with docs in their clinics, and LPNs too, but in hospitals you work more on your own, and can be made charge nurse, being over a group of LPNs and nursing assistants.
This is just my opinions but anyways CMAs are more of an office setting, and LPNs are more of a hospital/clinical setting. Good luck with your courses

Should a Certified Medical Assistant also take the test for Certified Phlebotomy Technician?

I am a certified Medical assistant and member of the AAMA. I was wondering if it would be in my best interest to also take the certification test for Phlebotomy Technician? I already draw blook and give injections at my present job at an internal med practice but would like to expand my knowledge and possibly work for a hospital or a blood bank. Would it change my pay scale to have both certifications?

Where I taught, the MAs also received a phlebotomy certificate along with the MA one. You might check with your school or the AAMA, your MA license may supercede the need to get a phlebotomy certificate (like my PA license allows me to draw blood without a phlebotomy one). Getting it, if you need it, may open a few more job doors, but will not impact your pay scale (or impact it significantly) as you will be paid to perform one set of duties & the pay would not be additive. They would hire a PT, for example, and pay at the PT scale, not a MA scale, if they did not want a MA.
