Your Questions About Medical Administrative Assistant Salary

David asks…

Health/Medical careers that don’t deal with patients much but pays good?

I want to be in the health/medical field working in an hospital. I live in Flint, MI. I will be attending Baker College. I don’t think I’m strong enough to deal with patients, so what are jobs that are in the background or office setting of dealing with patients that pays good and only requires a certificate or Associates Degree? I was looking at one of the hospitals in my area and there were positions for Patient Services Representative, Unit Clerk, and Administrative Assistant what are the duties of these jobs and what are the pay for them or other jobs in a hospital setting without dealing with patients much except for on paper? Also I was looking at surgical technician. Would that be a good career? Some programs offered at the college are Health Information Technology, Medical Administrative Assistant, and Medical Insurance Specialist, is that billing and coding? What is the salary for that? What are the duties of those careers? Thanks. I’d appreciate any feedback.

admin answers:

Medical insurance specialist might be a good choice. Talk with the advisors at the college you will be attending. They will have great advice for you.

By the way, another person suggested, nutritionist/dietitian. I worked in a hospital for 6 years and the nutritionist/dietitian worked VERY closely with patients (diabetics, post-surgery patients, rehabilitation patients, ICU, cardiac care, …) and required at least a 6 year master’s degree program.

Don’t base your life decisions on the answers people give on an open forum such as this one. Investigate the question yourself by calling or visiting a hospital human relations department. They are always looking for intelligent, motivated folks and will give you advice on needs of the hospital. Good luck with your decisions.

I’ve been in Health Information Technology for 6 years. It’s pretty easy, considering other jobs out there, and rather enjoyable.

The salary will range as to how much experience you have and what you’re willing to do. If you’re going to just do clerical in a med rec dept, you should expect to make $13-14 to start. If you go to school, get your degree, which qualifies you to take the RHIT exam (if it’s accredited program by the AHIMA) and you also do coding, expect to make $15 or so to start. Some hospitals will give you raises based on productivity.

I work at a psych hospital, had NO experience in the medical field, and started out making $13 an hour 6 years ago.

Usually unit clerks or unit secretaries make less money, around $10 an hour. Admin Assistants can make more, again if you have clerical experience and it depends on what position you’re assisting for. The higher up, the more experience they’ll require and the more responsibility you’ll have. Any one of these jobs, I’d suggest becoming a notary public, as it may help in getting hired. Hospitals love to have notaries on site.

Something else you can look into is Risk Management, Patient Advocate and HIPAA compliance officer. These are more specialized clerical areas that don’t always require you to be a nurse (some hospitals prefer nurses to do these jobs).

Good luck in whatever you choose. I gave you some links in the source area that could give you more information.

Salary question during a job interview?

I have an interview for a Medical Administrative Assistant position tomorrow at a doctor’s office and just in case the salary question comes up, I am just wondering what to say. I was thinking of saying, well I am negotiable but I was hoping to start somewhere between $12 and $15.

I know $15 seems high, but I had an interview at a medical clinic a few weeks ago and the manager said I would start at $14.99 if I was hired. $12 is the absolute minimum I can make, even that is a little low if I want to have a bit of a social life after all my bills and everything are paid for.

admin answers:

Seems like you have your answer right there.

A similar employer said $15/hour and the minimum you would be willing to accept is $12/hour.

Donna asks…

I am 17 and I want to start up with college. I want to make a great salary and have a stable, in-demand career?

I want a job that I can actually obtain! I recently graduated a technical school as an Administrative Medical Assistant. I feel like they trained me to be a ‘half ass’ medical secretary. I’m becoming so frustrated because every position I apply for wants you to be 18. So I’ve come to the conclusion that I just want to start college. I want to make a great salary but be able to find a job easily and keep it. I want to get a degree but I’m not sure what to go for. I like computers and I was thinking of something along those lines. Please give me some opinions on what is in demand as far as computer careers!! And what I (a 17-18 year old female) would even have a chance of obtaining.

admin answers:

Keep on with your studies and become experienced in the medical field. There is always a shortage of medical administrators and eventually you can get a decent salary. However, at your age you can’t expect a great salary to start with. You have to work your way up the ladder.

Betty asks…

Can any one help me to find an online Administrative Assistant job available at U.S.A?

I worked for an U.S disability Consultant Company as an online Administrative Assistant for 18 months till September 2009. I worked online from my home at Bangalore, India and was responsible for office support including data entry and corresponding with doctors’ offices, hospitals, and prisons for medical records to support the company’s clients’ claims for disability assistance. Since the president of the company, who appointed me has retired and his company was downsizing, my position was terminated.
My retired President has told me that the exchange rate between Indian rupees and U.S. dollars makes outsourcing data entry and medical records correspondence very profitable for his company. Possibly, outsourcing is something that could benefit in small business owners. I was receiving my salary every 4 weeks as a wire transfer. I am 43 years old male having 20 years experience in Indian Air Force in Administrative area.Could any one help me to find a permanent online job at U.S? I would be delighted to hear from you. How could I know a company is in need of somebody like me?

admin answers:

Good luck George, and I admire your efforts.
Unfortunately I can’t help.
