Employment: Looking for more money…?
If I want to get a job earning around $10,000.00 more than I currently making, would it be as simple as submitting resume and meeting interview? Or are they some tricks I would have to pull such as lying about salary, false references, etc?

In college right now trying to figure out what I should go for?
I’m in a Medical college right now and I am currently taking their Medical administrative assistant program. As I’m getting more into it I think I want to switch and do their Medical Assistant program. I still have about another mouth and a half to decided but I’m just not to sure. So I’m wanting to know if there is anyone out there that works for anyone of these jobs and can tell me more about them. How much is the range in the salary for each job and how is the job openings for these two jobs. I enjoy office work but I also enjoy customer service type jobs and working with people.

admin answers:
I’m not in either career, but the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) has really thorough information.
Below are the pages for each career. It includes education, job outlook, salary, etc.

Jenny asks…
Dental Assistant, Paralegal or Administrative assistant?
I have 3 kids, one on the way. After high school I took the medical assisting course and after 6 years of working as that I have pretty much capped out on my salary. So I want to go back to school but I’m not sure what field would be best and in the best interest of my kids. I am married and my husband has a good job but I want to help out and also be prepared in case God forbid something happens to him.
I wanted to go for Dental Hygiene but the course is 2 years and full time days only which I can’t do. What profession can give me steady income plus not take me away from my kids?

Dental Assistant. Possible job availability for the other two positions is drying right up. Law is VERY time consuming.
Be aware of what you are proposing on getting yourself into. Please do more research first. Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession. Consider career paths that have available JOBS.<<<<<<<<< Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING, crumbling, and dying vocational field. Many reasons. We now have computers. So, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, there are a lot of companies out there making very efficient legal software for the field of Law. Today’s graduating lawyers tend to be very computer savvy, so they just do the work themselves to save themselves the cost of overhead. Also, the “Public” buys this legal software in order to get legal work done without the cost of an Attorney. Also, we simply already have way too many Legal Professionals – we have an absolute glut!! (“Legal Professionals” includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)
There are no jobs in the vocational fields of Paralegal OR Administrative Assistant. My family, coworkers, friends, acqaintances, etc. Are being laid off left and right in this vocational field.
Employers today want employees with Bachelors degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those “certificates” you see advertised aren’t worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally scams. (I found this out the hard way.)
Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+.
Be prepared to take on a LOT of debt.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Even if you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <that the job market/economy is just saturated with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will lie to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival – they will tell students anything to get to the students’ money. (Which is why they won’t tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates………….Remember: law schools are BUSINESSES – their top concern is making money for themselves.
If you don’t believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. Call some local law firms – ask to speak to the Manager of Human Resources – ask them if they are hiring; ask them what they think about job availability in the field of Law………………
In the book “So You Want to be a Lawyer?” by Marianne Calabrese and Susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): “The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate >each year>>Healthcare or Information Technology! I spoke to a career counselor from Jobs and Family Services, and HE told me that these areas are where the jobs are, and future job availability! And scholarships!
Good luck.
(This is based on my current knowledge, information, belief, and life experiences. This was intended as personal opinion, and not intended to be used as legal advice. Please be careful and do your research.)

Helen asks…

she has in writing and taking to court stating that she IS a drop out and was in 10th grade and her last job was a 7.00 wage and in Vocational Training for a Inst. as a Administrative Medical Assistant.
CAN THIS BE TRUE!!!!!!!!
and no medical school or MA certified.

admin answers:
What is your issue here? If she got a GED, she could certainly be in a vocational training program now, or some training programs allow a student to earn their GED and then continue into the actual program.
Sounds like this woman may be trying to better herself with an education. More power to her for that. It can’t be easy with her past academics, lack of finances, and kids to care for. Why aren’t you cheering for her efforts to improve her options and her working life?
I don’t get this at all. . . .what is the problem?

admin answers:
Your two most recent jobs run simultaneously, so I have to assume neither one requires your full time. However, adding them together says you are currently making $52,500.
No, wait: the Centech one lists an ending salary as well as “Present.” So are you doing both? If so, you can hardly afford to leave both jobs at once. If that was a typo, and in fact you left them in December to go to FAA, then a reasonable salary for a replacement job would be $30,000.
Fact is, you need to move up by at least 10% to make jumping to the new job better than staying where you are. Otherwise, the fact that you have not stayed on any one job long is going to loom large on your resume. If these were all temporary assignments, or contract jobs that were completed, this would be reasonable. Otherwise, I would not hire you for fear you would not stay long.
If, on the other hand, you are staying with the current employer, but want to ask for a raise, no reason you should not ask for $30,000.
