Your Questions About Medical Assistant Description

George asks…

What are some jobs like a Medical Admin Assistant?

I want to work in the medical field, but have an office job. I really like the description of what a Medical Administration Assistant does but the pay just isn’t enough. Is there any careers that may have to take a bachelors or such that has better pay but still office work?

admin answers:

You would have to do management, most likely, in order to make good money at a medical office.

And even then, after you graduate and get your degree, you probably would have to start in a billing position or something like that first and work your way up, which you could do without a degree but probably would not get paid quite as much, looking at the long term.

But over all, If you are only going to get a bachelor’s, working in a medical office won’t really pay in the long run, if you have to pay for your college. If you are lucky enough to not have student loans after you graduate, then it would be worth it.

Hospitals would provide more opportunity for you, particularly Hospital Administration. I think you would need a master’s degree for this, but it is GOOD money! (although very stressful)

I work as a Medical Assistant, which is a fun, fairly easy job. I room patients and help the doctor with procedures, and also take care of his paperwork and schedule. I could not be happier with my job, I make decent money, too. I am able to live by myself without a room mate, and save money for luxuries like vacations and electronics that I love. I don’t make as much as a manager or hospital administrator, but I don’t have the headaches either! And that is more than worth the trade off, to me :-)

Good luck :)

medical assistant! any help would be appreciated :D ?

I’m currently a student at UCSD but I really want to be a medical assistant. I want to work in a hospital setting but really am not interested in becoming a nurse just because I can’t stand the blood, etc. The medical assistant job description really appeals to me. My main problem is that after researching about the occupation, it seems like the best way to go is to take community college courses, get certified, and then begin working. So what am I still doing at UCSD? Should I just graduate as fast as I can and then go to a comm college? Seems like an odd way to go. Any advice would be highly appreciated, thank you!
also, possibly other career options?
hmm those are good questions I didn’t think of, thank you! There is a community college nearby I have looked into where I could go for classes. As for working in a physician’s office, that would be ideal as well. For blood and stuff, I just get pretty uncomfortable around really gory stuff. But after reading, seems like MA may not be such a good career after all :/ any more suggestions?

admin answers:

How much have researched the MA career? Honestly it doesn’t sound like you have done too much because MAs rarely work as MAs in the hospital setting. Most are employed in physician’s offices and urgent care clinics. In the doc’s office, they draw blood and in the urgent care center, you are going to see plenty of bloody injuries that need sutured. In the hospital setting, an MA usually works as a unit secretary.

Next, keep in mind some things about Medical Assisting:

Currently, most all areas in the US are over-saturated with Medical Assistants (contrary to the misinformed people that write yahoo news stories about job projections).

Pay is between $10-16 an hour, depending on where in the US you live, type of practice, and amount of professional experience you have.

Have you looked into what the job market in your area like for MAs? Are there community colleges, for-profit (and over-priced) “career institutes” like Ultimate, Everest, etc , vo-tech schools, and welfare-to-work programs that are churning out new grads every 9-12 months? If so, you might need to evaluate how many qualified applicants there are for each job that’s available. You’re really going to have to “stand out” if you are in an area that’s saturated with MAs but lacking in available positions (most cities/regions have way more MAs than jobs for MAs).

Next, determine if what the going rate for MAs in your area is compatible with what your lifestyle and debt load is. MAs make around $10-16 an hour (depending on experience, type of practice, location in the US, etc). Do you want to go through an over-priced career institute and end up owing 16K+ in student loans? You shouldn’t pay more than 3K for a certificate program and no more than 7K for an Associate Degree program. Check out what your local community college has instead of a “private school”.

How about if you plan to have children or already have very young ones? MAs generally work during the week, so what about child care? Is half of your MA paycheck going to go for daycare?

Just some things to think over before you enroll in any program

Spend some time going over those factors before you sign up for any classes!

Starting out as an MA is probably the easiest way into the medical field.

For pre-med, your classes should be at a 4 year school.

Don’t ignore nursing. It’s a good profession that pays well.
