Steven asks…
How can I become a medical research assistant?
For the past few years, I’ve developed an interest in medical research, especially, cancer research due to my personal experience. However, I have no experience in medical field. For the past 3 years, I’ve worked in financial industry and prior to that, I was in travel industry. I have a B.A. but not in science. I believe I have a lot of transferable skills since I have experience in administrate duties, data collection, entry, analysis, etc. I have applied for a position that requires a Bachelor’s Degree with no prior experience or a High School Diploma with research experience but I’ve got no interview. Is it impossible to change my career to this field at this point unless I go to a graduate school? Is there anything I can do to get this job?
what type of volunteer work are you referring to in this case – concerning medical research? I have found a lot of schools offering Medical Assistant training but not medical research assistant. As for biology class, I have taken that class in school, but you think that I should go back to take more classes in school again?

admin answers:
You need to take biology class, and do volunteer work to gain experience, BA is ok.
How old are you? Employer prefer young because of innovative thinking.
There are some labs offering volunteer training, you learn how to run PCR, record data…contact medical schools or big hospitals

David asks…
Nurses, I need help finding veins to draw blood, any tips?
I am a medical assistant, i normally work front office but now I am doing back office which requires Phlebotomy skills. I can draw blood just find and I know how to do everything, but are there any tips to help you find the veins in the arm? besides putting on an extra tight tourniquet?
Please help and thanks in advance

admin answers:
Ask the patient to flex and extend his elbow. This increases the venous return of the entire arm and makes the veins prominent. Locally compress the mid arm area after asking the patient to do the above and then feel very gently in the cubital fossa region for the median cubital vein . Veins are better felt than seen, in most healthy individuals . In black people it even more diff. To see them.
Palpate very gently for the “venous sensation”

C.V. (Curriculum Vitae) Help Required?
Hello.
Unfortunately, I was made redundant this morning and now need to produce a C.V. to get back hunting for a job as soon as possible. The problem is, I haven’t produced a C.V. for at least 7 years so am way out of touch.
If someone can take a few moments to have a look over what I have manage to produce so far I would be extremely grateful for any constructive comments and advice as I appreciate it is a little rough. (Please Note: The layout has changed pasting it here and some information – personal details, employers names, etc have been removed but I intent on using them).
Thanks very much

Thanks InThe….I’m definitely replacing my bit with the one you wrote – sounds so much better. I told you I’m out of touch with CV writing.
Thankyou so much for your help

admin answers:
Try and shorten it slightly. (Too much detail).
Two pages at the most.
Improve your spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Use good quality paper, good clean printer, neat presentation.
Best of luck.

John asks…
Should I join the military?
I’ve been married for 14 years and have two kids, I meet their weight limits and am sure I could do all the sit ups and running required , I would like to further my nursing skills and become a licensed vocational nurse. I’m already a certified medical assistant and a nurse aide. My husband thinks though that if I joined I’d get shipped off somewhere far away. Is this true?
Should I join?

admin answers:
Just a thought; have you looked into the Reserves or National Guard? All branches have Reserves, and both the Army and Air Force have the National Guard. It’s one weekend a month at your local base, two weeks a year somewhere else (without your kids!!! Woohoo!!!). You are still eligible to be deployed (usually up to a year), but outside of deployment you would be at home.
I have 3 kids and have been married for 12 years, and am joining the Army Reserves. Call me terrible, but two weeks away from the pack of animals I live with sounds like Heaven! I will absolutely miss them when/if I’m deployed, but the selfish part of me is also looking forward to the first chance in many years to just be me, rather than Mommy or Wife, if that makes sense. Just for a little while.
Since you’ve been married for so long, I’m assuming you’re in your thirties? You should know the max age for each branch:
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/enlstandards.htm
Active Army – 42
Army Reserves – 42
Army National Guard – 35 (changed from 42 in 2009)
Active Air Force – 27
Air Force Reserve (inlcuding National Guard) – 34
Active Navy – 34
Naval Reserves – 39
Active Marines – 28
Marine Corps Reserve – 29
Active Duty Coast Guard – Age 27. Note: up to age 32 for those selected to attend A-school directly upon enlistment (this is mostly for prior service).
Coast Guard Reserves – Age 39.
The above link lists the rest of the requirements as well.
In my case, I only qualify for Army (Active or Reserves) and the Naval Reserves. All age limits mean that you must enlist before you turn that age (so if the age limit is 39, you must ship for basic before your 39th birthday).
And just a bit about the nursing…the Army offers 68w, which is a Medic. You then have the chance to add training to that to be an LPN. However, getting a slot in that LPN training school is tough because everyone wants it. Still, much of your training can count toward college credits. I can’t tell you exactly how it works for the other branches, other than to say that no branch actually trains you to be an RN just through service (if that matters to you).

Good luck, and if you have any more questions I hope you’ll email me through my profile!
