Helen asks…
What is the starting salary for someone entering Medical Office Administration?
This is a career I’m interested in, but I don’t wanna go to college for two years and end up making nothing but $25K, as is the case for most medical assistants.

admin answers:
13 $ an hour

Thomas asks…
medical assistant to office manager – is there a diff in schooling?
i am in a 2 year associate degree program for medical assisting but the salary isnt so great to be a m.a. so what would be a better job to go into after i start working as an m.a. but want to get a further education. to be the office manager would i have to go back to school? bc im not getting a bachelor in anything now bc im just in the ma program.
thanks

admin answers:
You don’t need a degree to be an office manager. It’s not a licensed or certified position. However, employers will expect you to have office experience and excellent English skills. They usually want a professional, not someone who doesn’t capitalize and uses txt spk. I don’t say this to insult you but to prepare you for the real world. If that means you add a few English composition classes and a few business classes, then do it. Those kinds of classes can help someone present a more professional package.

Daniel asks…
Medical Office Administration or Medical Assistant?
I am trying to decide to go to school for Medical Assistant or for Medical Office Administration.
There is a two year waiting period for nursing as well as physical therapist assistant and many other programs at the local colleges.
The two programs that I can get into are
Medical Office Administration
and
Medical Assistant
The school offers a 12 month class for Medical Office Administration and a 16 month class for Medical Assistant.
Neither one offers a degree but a Certificate.
This is an accredited College that is available for Pell Grants from FASFA.
Brookstone College of Business in Greensboro North Carolina and it’s not a cheap school at
$16,800 for Medical Assistant
$12,000 for Medical Office Administration
There is also an internship near the end of the school program. and a job placement specialist and so far all of their graduates have all got jobs.
Right now I am just trying to choose between the two.
The person I spoke with at the school told me that Medical Assistant‘s make more money, and men in the field are in high demand.
The problem is that everything I see online tells me that Medical Office Administration makes more money.
I have searched Salary.com and a few other places.
Has anyone here worked at either, or know someone who has.
I am not planning on doing any additional education years later to become a nurse or anything so whatever I choose would be a the career path I go into.
My questions are these
1) Which position makes more money?
2) Which position would be easier to get?
3) What is a typical day like for these two positions?

I am currently studying to be a Medical Assistant, I have heard that they make more money then a Medical Office Assistant. Do whatever you think would be suitable for you, either is a good career path.

George asks…
Medical Office Assistant or Paralegal?
I’m torn between the two professions, both have staying power and both have decent salaries. I like dealing with people, staying busy, and like seeing things get done. I am going to finish a general studies A.A, and am wanting a certificate in either one afterwards. I like studying both, and find both helpful in life even if I decide to go on to college later. What do you think about these?

admin answers:
Well what it all comes down to is what YOU would really like to do most!
I think a Medical Office Assistant would be the most rewarding to me & you know what they say about Lawyers!
No one trusts them. Lol.

Charles asks…
Certifed Medical Assistants in New Jersey? Salary?
I have been working for almost 8 months now, i just passed the NCCT test to become a Certified Medical Office Assistant (even tho my job is mostly clinical, unfortunatelty the school i went to doesnt qualify students to take the Certifed Medical Assistant exam till we have been working for 2 years). After working for 6 months i was elidgible to take the CMOA exam which i did and passed. now im making a wopping $12.50/hr ($.50 cent raise). I am 27 years old, have an associates degree in college. I just found out the new front desk girl, 25yo college drop out, whos was previous job was a waitess at TGIFridays and another medical office only 10 months is making $13.25! she answers the phones and i take blood and vitals of patients, and monitor their pregnancy (i work at an OB/GYN doc for a large company).
Anyway, my question is… what are other CMA’s making and with how much experience?
Help me please!!

admin answers:
Medical Assistants are paid very low, it isn’t just you.
On average, most MAs make between $10-15, I have rarely heard of an MA making more than $16 and that is usually with years of experience.
Did any of your associates degree cover billing and coding? If so, you might want to consider shifting your focus from the clinical side to the back office.
Most entry level coders (who have 1-2 years of coding experience) start out around $12-15 an hour, once you gain more experience, the pay goes up to around $16-20 an hour and increases with more experience and credentials, to around $21-25.
You defnitely can’t make that much as an MA.
