Your Questions About Medical Office Assistant Salary

Veterinary Receptionist Salary and questions?

Hi, I just graduated at the top of my class from my Medical Office Assistant school. I worked my butt off, got excellent grades, and now I’m ready to work! I’ve sent out so far 30 applications. I’ve got 2 interviews lined up next week. One is for a Veterinary Receptionist position at an Animal Hospital, the other is for a Medical Records Clerk at a Psychiatric & Substance Abuse Care Facility. Animals are my passion in my life, so I always want to be around them. But the other thing is that in this day and age the will to survive and support yourself, is well kinda stronger.

I live around Buffalo, NY and I seem to be getting conflicted salaries. I’m just wondering which makes more. And really what are the best questions to ask an employer for both positions, and what questions can I be expected to answer?

I already plan to ask the medical coverage for both positions. My dad wants to retire soon, so at least he’d only have to worry about my brother, and if I can take care of myself, well that would be just great.

Thanks in advance for answering! Happy Holidays!

Education, experience, and location all play a part in determining wages. Also, the competition for the job will matter too. I suggest that you check salary.com. I suggest that you take whichever job is offered and keep applying for your dream job.

Information and Opinions about Exec. and/or Medical Secretary/Assistant?

I am starting early college high school this year, which means that, when I graduate at 18, along with my High school Diploma, I will also get my Associates Degree. I either want to be an Office Secretary, (Executive Assistant), or a Medical Secretary. I want to know the Pro’s and Con’s of both careers, in order to help make my decision. I would like to know the salary, daily duties, and education, etc. required for both, and also your opinion. I intend on getting my Bachelor’s Degree after I graduate from my Early College Highschool. (2 excess years) Thanks for your help and time.

I’m going to go the other route and say Administrative Assistant. I have been one for a long time and it is a very rewarding career. Being an admin is virtually recession proof, as your skills transfer into practically any industry.

As far as salary goes, depending on where you live, you can expect to start out making $10-$13/hour. If you apply for major corporations, they tend to pay higher than small businesses or ‘mom and pop’ places. Plus there are more opportunities for advancement.

An Executive Assistant is someone who supports top Executives in a company, usually Directors, Vice Presidents, all the way up to a CEO. Again, depending on where you are located in the US and what type of company you work for, Executive Assistants make very good money, sometimes even six figures. Keep in mind these positions are very competitive and you really need experience and to stand out. But it’s a great job and I definitely encourage it as a goal. If you do, consider going on to get your Bachelor’s Degree, something along the lines of Business Management. That will help you along the way.

Good luck to you! This is an exciting time in your life and you have the whole world open to you. Keep your options open and learn as much as you can, because you never know…you might change your mind! :)

admin answers:

Everyone I have ever known who has gone to get medical assistant training has never been able to find a job… There is no market for medical assistants…

The only person who is profiting is the ones who run the school, who charge $25,000 for this worthless education.

John asks…

For Medical Assistants:?

I am in school to be an MA and I am required to ask the following questions of fellow MA’s about the profession…could you please help me out?

First Name:

Name of Dr./Office:

1. How long have you been a Medical Assistant?

2. Did you take a class or did you train on the job?

3. What does a Medical Assistant start at, salary wise?

4. Is there room for advancement?

5. Are you happy with your decision to become a Medical Assistant?

admin answers:

1. I am a Certified Medical Assistant. I took my exam in January of this year.
2. I went to New England Technical Institute in CT and enrolled in the MA program part time nights. When I was finished with classes, I had to complete a 240 hour unpaid externship with a doctor’s office. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
3. 14 an hour for a GOOD place. Some MA’s make 12 to 13 an hour at first. Private practice doctors may pay you a bit more, but the insurance coverage sucks. It’s not a job you’re going to become rich at, unless you marry the boss. The doctors expect a LOT from you, no matter what you’re getting paid. If you’re making 13 an hour, you’re still going to work hard and run your butt off, sometimes with 10 minutes for lunch.
4. I suppose there is, if you are lucky enough to get into a hospital, which I recommend. The benefits are better. Stay away from private practice. Get into an actual company. Being an MA may actually motivate you to further your education and go for RN. That’s the big money!
5. Yes. However, I work for a laboratory that does drug testing, and I love my job, even though it’s not what I went to school for. There are a lot of different places you can go, you don’t have to be a traditional MA.

Enjoy school.
